The movie is based on the novel by the Russian author Leo Tolstoi, written in 1878. The story unfolds in its original late 19th century tsarist Russia high-society setting and powerfully explores the capacity for love that surges through the human heart, from the passion between adulterers to the bond between a mother and her children. The main character is the Russian aristocrat Anna Karenina, who questions her happiness and decides to make some change in her family, friends and the community. She has an affair with Count Vronsky, although she is married to Alexei Karenin, but this relationship does not end well.
Anna Karenina is portayed by as gorgeous as always Keira Knightley, her husband Karenin by Jude Law and Vronsky by Aaron Taylor-Johnson. The movie is directed by Joe Wright, who has worked together with Keira in Atonement and Pride & Prejudice before.
Upon its release on the 7th of September in the UK, the film received positive to mixed reviews from critics, with most praising the cast – particularly Knightley – and the production design but criticizing the script and Wright's apparent preference for style over substance. The whole film is set in a theatre, it even has a horse race on stage. This new manner of picturising a subject that has been made a movie over 12 times before brings a fresh and innovational breeze into the maybe already shop-soiled and worn-out story. The brilliant performance of the whole cast also successfully revives it.
There are many rumors on the internet that "Anna Karenina" will recieve at least one nomination for an Academy Award. The nomination for the best costumes seems to be quite certain and maybe we can hope for Best Actress as well. Sadly the movie's chances in actually winning an Oscar are considered to be quite low as the brillinat film adaption of the famous musical "Les Misérables" with Anne Hathaway will probably be the successful one. But also the upcoming western film "Django Unchained" with Leonardo DiCaprio and Jamie Foxx is believed to collect some of the coveted trophies. But we all don't know anything for sure yet, all we can do is wait and hope for as many nominations and wins as possible!
So all in all, this movie sounds very interesting and the first stills we have already seen are absolutely gorgeous and testify the film being worth watching! Sadly, neither of has read the book but we will go to the cinema as soon as possible, hoping that we will understand the rather complicated yet beautiful story. We are looking forward to it!
